This is what the main street of Vientiane, Avenue Lane Xang, looked like in early 1973. The triumphal arch was built in the 1960's, according to Wikipedia with money given by the US to be used for a new airport. The arch is said to honour the Laotians who died fighting the French colonizers.
Judging from pictures I've seen on the internet, this street and its surroundings have been remarkably spruced up since 1973. This view may not be very flattering of a capital city, but it gives an idea of the very rural small town atmosphere of Vientiane 35 years ago.
This was scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

Hej Gert,
A funny picture. Normally I would consider this a very bad photo with all the cables and poles obscuring the real motive; the arch! But in this case it is quite a good observation, a real documentary!

Hello Gert. The title is promising. But then the thing becomes clear. The photo is alive and worth seeing. A good shot for TE. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Hallo Gert!
Very interesting - also the note! A photo in the true sense of TE! Thank you! (Cropping all these wires would be fun ... ;-)
I like the sarcastic title very much ;-))
Greetings from summerly Germany!

Hi Gert,

Funny picture of the Laotian Champs Elysees. I love all those cables and poles , it is so tipical for exotic countries. Well, this main point of Vientian looked even less like in capital thirty years later. For fun I send two WS. I will delete it later.

Warm regards

Malgorzata

Hello Gert!Unique picture and very interesting scene! In the depth I see a building that has a lot of interest In any case the picture speaks her abbey for a lot of things with a lot of elements. I praise you.

Hej Gert,
that's another very interesting (already documentary) photo! I have compared the Workshop photos... well, the "original" looks like very good food for thought!
Somehow (although it's sad to say) this reminds me of the current situation in some Russian provinces.
thank you, and best regards!

Dag Gert,

What a lovely oldie...we were on Avenue Lane Xang just a month ago and, yes, some of the electricity poles must have been renewed and there are now some fancy buildings on the Avenue (banks, etc.), but I doubt if that much has changed really. This is a great view!
