Laotian government soldiers at the air-strip of Sayabouri (Muang Xayabury) in central Laos, January 1973. Laos was still at war at that time. Only a few months later a ceasefire was signed and the communists, who already controlled a large part of the country, joined the government. Two years later new fighting broke out and the communists took power. So these soldiers were fighting a losing battle.
This picture was taken through the window of a civilian DC-3 belonging to the Royal Air Lao, an airline that wouldn't be royal so much longer. A crack in my window is clearly visible as a blurred, uneven line to the right.
This was scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

Excellent document of those times, Gert. Very good scan. Maybe I'd crop slightly from the bottom the area with the shadow of the wing, which is a little bit distracting. Regards, Daniel

Hi Gert,

Interesting image and very descriptive of a situation affecting a country. The image is well composed, with good colours and details. The planes and other military equipment provide a more interesting approach to the composition. Thanks for sharing Gert.

Interesting photo. Smart title. An impressive presentation, no doubt.

Hej Gert
Interesting picture and an interesting note. Did you dare fly an airplane with a cracked window? Good scan!

Hej Gert,

it's a great documentary photo! I like photos which make people think and contemplate.. especially over such important issues.
IMHO, this is the photo where the colours and the idea are intertwined, even though it happened to be so accidentally.

The colours are wonderful, especially if we take into account that the photo was taken on the spot through the window.

Basically, I'd call it a "three-colour-photo" for there are three main colours (green-blue-yellow) which is good because too many colours would be distracting as the photo itself conveys a very important idea/subject. The colours are only an addition to the idea.. or part of it.

I also thought about the (distracting) shadow which "pastadog" mentioned. I tried cropping it in various ways... but finally came to the conclusion that it's necessary here even though it's so black. Kind of menacing. And helps highlight the foreground and the background (I'd rather say "middleground":))
Without it the composition "hangs" in the air. Anyway it's only my humble opinion...
best regards,
Elena

Hi Gert,
another one great documentary photo from you
impressed me again
thanks for sharing and explanation

Hi Gert,
Your shots are certainly one of a kind here on TE. Personally, I do not care (much) about perfect visual aethetics here, as their documentary value far surpasses these superficial elements. Keep on posting them.
cheers,
CT

Hi Gert, Interesting documentary shot, showing us aspects of a war that featured heavily in the headlines in the 70s. Lots of interesting detail - the boys standing together, men resting in the shade of the far plane and of course the old planes themselves. Cheers, Steve

Interesting ducomentary here Gert as seen from the passing DC3. An a very well conserved dias from -73. Even the scanning seems to have gone well with keping the colours crisp and fresh after all those years.

Gert,
A wonderful image showing a sad history of a once war torned country. Fortunately life is getting better there, I hope or it seems. I like most about this image is the story behind the image and that you have been there to witness the event to caputure that moment in the history of my so call homeland. Great scanned image. All seem very clear and sharp, it would have put some of the digital image to shame. Thanks for showing part of history and most of us is slowly forgetting. An image tha should be printed on book and magazine like National Geogrphy or the like. Excellent, I wish there are more photo like this being shown here.

Hello Gert, Another very interesting & well reproduced image. The blurr caused by the crack is not a problem but adds to the authenticity of this image. A good piece of history & one that we read quite a bit about.
Well done
Santo

Hej Gert,
Wasn't that a civilwar or was it a war against Americans, can't really remember. everything was such a mess but as I remembered it it was invaded by the North Vietnames ( russians) and protected by a right wing Royal nationalists (USA)
and then forgotten in decades.

As always a good documentary from a time when I still was playing soccer in the backyard and Johan Cruyff was idol.

Very interesting picture of a piece of the war history of Laos, I like the detail of the broken window where you were seated.

Best regards.

Really interesting and exotic, a bit like the sequence of an old film... I like to watch all this activity, great to see a 35 years old photo so well preserved ! Your note is also interesting, so much has happened to that poor country since then !
Friendly regards,
Cath.
