It's an early morning in Luang Prabang, January 1973. The small market stalls along the main street have opened but business doesn't seem to have taken off yet.
When this picture was taken, Laos was still at war. Luang Prabang was quiet most of the time except for occasional shellings of the airport or the outskirts of the city. The guerilla was very close, and although I didn't notice any lack of food, the local farmers may have had problems getting their products to the market.
Luang Prabang was characterized by several colourful Buddhist pagodas and monasteries and faded French colonial buildings. These days it's a major tourist hub and has probably seen a lot of restoration, but in 1973 very few foreigners came here.
This was scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

Hej Gert,
again an interesting daily life scene, especially from the country which I'm unlikely to visit although I'm very interested in it (and in Asia, in general). Each photo is a value.
For such a very old scanned slide it's a very good photo!
There's a lot to see in the picture: surroundings (the old building, trees), people(and what each of them is doing), food they sell, even expressions on the people's faces. And I'm even trying to guess what sort of weather/climate it was :)
The colours are in a good balance, as always!
thanks a lot and best regards,
Elena

Hi Gert,
View of the Louang prabang. Wonderful city. Five years ago there were many tourists there but it preserved still unique atmosphere. And we could buy baguettes what was good. To eat rice or noodles three times a day during a month was rather hard. Splendid old photo, with nice house, palms and people in colourful dresses. They still wear such pareo. I use one as table cloth.

Regards

Malgorzata

Hej Gert,
A very live-full dailylife photo. It consists of several small happenings peopel looking at each other. What makes it even better is your describing story behind.

Hello Gert. Market in the morning, - directly beside the road. Buyers look at themselves the goods. The people are dressed traditional. The photo is very alive and has documentary worth. It pleases me very well. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Hi Gert,
Very interesting picture - and a very good one, but I'm not going to talk about technical aspects. The "thing" about this picture is the story it tells, this scene from the everyday life during an interesting period. Your note is very intructive too, thanks for sharing!

Pedro

Hej Gert
Many fine details here and and a good capture of daily life. What kind of vegetables are they selling?
