During a long journey through Asia in 1972–73 I spent some time in Laos. The country was still at war and getting a visa was a bit tricky. However, once I had my visa I found out that the best place to enter the country was in the far north, where it was possible to stay as long as I wished. Entering straight through Vientiane, the capital, most tourists were only given three days.
So I went to northern Thailand and found myself a small boat to take me across the Mekong into Laos. This is from the Laotian border town Ban Houei Sai with the Mekong and Thailand on the other side. A soldier is going towards the river, while I was going towards the town center to buy a plane ticket. Because of the war it was impossible to travel overland, so flying was the only option.
This was scanned from a Kodachrome slide. I used a Canon FT-QL.

Great photo and story. I like the soldier and the dog as the only signs of human activity in the picture. The road which sits almost perpendicular to the river provides an excellent line of sight that makes this photo seem to go on and on. Well done.

Hello Gert,
the story-note and the photo go very well together!
I like photos taken in Asia, and this photo is very good by itself: both the colours and the composition. The colour of the road matches the colours of the roofs of the houses.
I like the idea of those diagonal lines going across the picture to different directions: the faraway hills and the line of the house roofs going down... sort of dynamic! There's a lot for the eyes to see in this photo.
And if it were not for the soldier, I would think that the area is uninhabited!
best regards,
Elena
PS I wonder what this area looks like now...

Hi Gert,

Nice view of the border village. It reminds me my journey to Laos. I also crossed the border somewhere near Golden Triangle. The place looked similar like this one and the border looked funny - just a man sitting on the chair. I was there 5 years ago so there were no problems with visa, of course. Then I went on the boat 2 days to Luang Prabang. It was magnificent journey. Thanks for sharing this beautiful photo.

In WS the border 5 years ago. It was the funniest border I have ever seen.

Hello Gert. Laos. For most it is a strange country. At that time (1972) it must have been still more backward. The photo shows the landscape and a small village with straw-covered houses. A beautiful sight. Exemplary also the informative text. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Hello Gert,

A picturesque scene with this typical settlement!
And there is a war going on nearby, I can see a guy in green here too...
This is a fine composition, that also shows the superiority of slide film concerning colour preservation!

Greetings,
Pablo -

Hej Gert
A beautiful place and an interesting documentary picture. I hardly saw the soldier; he is well camouflaged!
